A short biography of
DEVJANI SEN

"Dance is the loftiest, the most moving, the most beautiful of the arts, because it is no mere translation or abstraction from life, it is life itself." Devjani Sen was initiated into this world of dance at a tender age of eight under the fold of Amala Shankar's dance academy at Kolkata where she learnt the nuances of Bharatnatyam, Kathakali and Manipuri. During her stint with Amala Shankar, she was a regular participant in their annual festivals. Providing a wider canvas was her regular participation in Tagore's dance dramas like "Shyama", "Chandalika", and "Chitrangada".
However, it was the grace and lyrical beauty of Odissi that attracted Devjani to this dance form and in 1980 she started her rigorous and intensive training under the tutelage of Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Kolkata. Starting from her Manch Pravesh in 1984 at Padatik, Kolkata, Devjani became the youngest member of Guruji's composition on Jayadev's Geet Govindam and traveled with his troupe across India.
Since then Devjani has participated in various productions choreographed and directed by Guruji. A teacher of Odissi dance, Devjani, had run her own classes at the Arya Samaj Mandir, Bangalore till 2003, and subsequently at Dubai where she stayed for three years. She is back in Bangalore and is teaching at Smriti Nandan Cultural Centre, Nanda-Deep at Palace Road and at The Bengalee Association, Ulsoor.

"Odissi is my life, my passion, my religion. In my own humble way, I try to evangelize the Odissi dance form and spread its beauty across the world," says Devjani who has grown to become a leading teacher of Odissi in Bangalore.
